MANAGER / SENIOR MANAGER - OPERATIONAL RISK

LONDON – PARIS – FRANKFURT – MUNICH

We are looking for experienced Operational Risk executives to join our client’s globally renowned risk and strategy practice where you will add your understanding and expertise of the UK/European market to assist in the growth of the practice.

OPERATIONAL RISK - OPPORTUNITY DESCRIPTION

We have worked with a range of clients on operational risk projects across different industry players (insurance, banking, investment management, niche firms etc.) and within different functions in the institution (group risk, head of business, board reporting etc.). Our differentiating factor is abstracting from the standard ‘tick-the-box’ approaches, and producing senior management MIS which facilitate major operational decisions. Thus, as with other Finance and Risk Management work we conduct, we span the full spectrum of applications from Compliance, through operational and tactical efficiency, to strategic implications and Board level reporting.

Amongst recent engagements for leading financial services institutions we count the following:

  1. Group Operational Risk Framework Development and Implementation (several large European banks and other financial institutions): From initial set-up and planning through to a full AMA-compliant framework, including risk identification, loss data collection, capital modelling and allocation, Key Risk Indicators, organisational optimisation, definition of roles and responsibilities and implementation of policy documents and a business-as-usual ‘corporate calendar’
  2. Targeting AMA Compliance Accreditation (several large banks): Largely as type 1 above, but with a narrower focus on AMA compliance and hence little business-as-usual support
  3. Risk Measurement and Capital Allocations (over 15 firms, including three of the top European banks and a top-three global insurer): Deriving client-specific models for capital calculation, allocation and incentive setting using a combination of internal and external data, scenarios and business environment and internal control scorecards, and embedding the measurement in an integrated economic capital framework
  4. Risk Identification & Reporting (several large banks and other financial institutions): Conducting risk identification/scenario analysis workshops and leveraging this and other data (e.g. internal losses) to produce concise reports to the Risk/Audit Committee and senior management
  5. Group Operational Risk Organisation (several large banks and other financial institutions): Optimal structuring of responsibilities between Audit, Compliance and Operational Risk in the light of Basel II and Sarbanes-Oxley, including trimming of duplicated reporting lines to the Risk/Audit Committee
  6. Programme-wide Validation & Recommendations (over 10 banks and other financial institutions, including leading European players): Assessment for the entire operational risk programme of current practices and plans in respect of measurement, management, policies and processes against Basel II, best practice and long-term ambitions, and advising on ways forward, including detailed cost-benefit analyses and work plans
  7. Area-specific Validation & Recommendations (several large banks): Assessment for particular areas of operational risk measurement, management, policies and/or processes of current practices and plans against Basel II, best practice and long-term ambitions, and advising on ways forward, including detailed cost-benefit analyses and work plans

We continue to be committed to the development of leading edge solutions for financial services institutions and have together with our clients moved the thinking in several operational risk areas significantly over the last few years and the candidate will join a dynamic environment with plenty of scope for contributing in the continued enhancements of our offerings as well as delivering solutions across the entire spectrum of operational risk management solutions.

Candidate Profile

  • 3+ years in relevant discipline [financial services consulting or risk management professional within financial services firm] with at least 2 years specific focus on operational risk
  • Track record of developing and implementing new / advanced operational risk management techniques / processes at leading financial institutions
  • Additional exposure to, and comfort with, a broad range of risk management work
  • Strong academic background; mathematical / finance with commensurate academic qualifications or further relevant degrees an advantage
  • Used to working in team environment, and ideally in a project-based structure. Proven record of managing teams to deliver against tight deadlines. Ability to direct the work of consultants, ensuring quality of delivery, and provide comprehensive support for Directors in project execution
  • Proven ability to create and present material suitable for mid to senior level client staff, and to write / co-ordinate technical methodology documentation for client hand-off
  • Ability to travel and desire to act as primary on-site point of contact; directly responsible to Director and client for successful delivery of work
  • Keenness to learn and intellectual curiosity, ideally demonstrated by having undertaken project work at management in different areas or via thought leadership role in operational risk

The new consultants will focus on the management of Finance and Risk projects, with heavy specialisation in Operational Risk. It is envisaged that they will quickly expand this base to include broad execution support of the franchise, whilst helping to further the intellectual capital of the Firm in the Operational Risk area.

All candidates must exhibit the necessary focus on excellence and consistent track record of over performance that has helped the firm achieve its consistent growth in recent years. In addition they must be able to demonstrate the following:

  • First rate academic background
  • Proven consulting skills
